It’s been 3 weeks since I first worked in this company. This is my first job of becoming a full time programmer. Ever since I was in the 2nd year of Uni, I always dreamt of having a career in programming or software development. I enjoyed writing codes, participating in projects with different individuals, and developing new ideas. But now that I got my dream job, one word I can say about being a programmer is: BORING.

Don’t get me wrong. I still love writing codes. I still love to learn new things about IT and its new developments. But I don’t know, if I get stucked in one place like I am now, I get bored easily. Maybe because I have no one to talk to… I’m the only programmer in the company and the only female employee in the company. I do my work on my own; I don’t get to share it to anyone (except my boss, of course) and I don’t get to be in a team. It really is boring to be just on your own… from 8.30 am til 5.30 pm… staring at the computer all the time. Knowing that I am the only female and knowing that this company is owned and operated by Saudis, I can’t freely talk to my colleagues in the office. We feel like there exists unwritten rule about “socialising” in the office. Sometimes we’re bored and so fed up with work that everytime our boss get out of the office, we gather and talk… hehe. You know, we need entertainment sometimes.

I am very grateful that I get this job, seriously. But it’s NO FUN at all. I get frustrated very easily. I don’t want to complain, but I have no energy and enthusiasm like I always have everytime I wake up in the morning to go to work. It makes me sad. I don’t want to do something that I don’t enjoy. The office environment is amazing, I get a desk overlooking one of Jeddah’s busy street. My boss, though a little bit strict, is nice and never screams (like most Arabs).. at least, he respects me as a human being. But I’m looking for something more… unfortunately.
